How Are Things Going Since I’ve Been Off the Hamster Wheel?
I’ve been asked this question since I quit my corporate job. It’s been a year and two months since I quit my 9-to-5 lifestyle . . . and I'm feeling good!! Nina Simone’s voice is constantly in my head. The departure from the once normal routine has been freeing.
I gave up that hamster wheel which included me working at large law firms, commuting from one major city to another while experiencing lots of stress and struggle. If you've worked in a corporate or institutional structure, I know you know, the hamster wheel struggle is real.
I’ve done this work for about 30 years and commuted in different states. Among other roles, you could place me in the categories of “serial commuter” and “job hopper”. This left me unhappy and not well. I’m talking about being burnt out.
I’m Doing Well Now
Since exiting the traditional world of work, the practical side of this has included taking on contractual clients and expanding Wellside Retreats–my wellness and retreat business. It’s been a learning curve that requires me to give myself grace. I’ve had to adjust to servicing myself by paying taxes and health care. I pay into my retirement and investment accounts on my own.
Emotionally and physically, it's the best decision I’ve made in the pre-retirement phase of my life. There’s a lightness in my spirit and in my mind. I no longer hold my breath during the day as I produce results for clients and for my own interests.Taking a walk or running long errands in the middle of the day are enjoyable. Oh, and what about the naps smack dab in the middle of whenever!
So, yes, I’m doing well.
Taking the Leap
I took the leap into this phase of my life based on the dreams and affirmations I placed in my journals. One journal in particular, included plans to own a business, to be a freelancer and to become independently and financially sustainable.
When the Great Reset (the Pandemic) took over our lives, there were lots of energetic forces that came together - God. I began to meet people through virtual spaces and communities that were also interested in living life off the hamster wheel. I found people who were dreaming the same dream I had tucked away.
What many people, like myself, have done during this period is open up to taking action on our dreams, inspiration and callings. We learned (embraced) that It’s never too late to make a change if we’re willing to do the work.
Would you like to learn how you can leap into something new even if it seems too far to reach? Here are some suggestions on how you get to the place you desire:
Steps to Taking a Leap - any leap!
Make a plan. Even if the plans are baby steps - get that journal out!
Adjust your plan and give yourself time and grace. Your plan is not anyone else's plan
Rid yourself of unnecessary expenses and spending.
Save and invest for the life you desire
Fear is not a factor. Be discerning. Fear, nervousness and doubts creep into our mind; move through fear.
Find a like minded person or community to hold you accountable.
Do the work - take the actions to get you where you want to be.
Repeat
This year has gone by very quick and I’m learning how to live, sustain myself and move forward by creating the life and workstyle I choose. As anything new takes time to adapt to, I’m getting used to it and sure it will settle in very soon.
